Borgo San Lorenzo by Andrea Abati is a triptych that is part of the series La Forza della Natura (The Force of Nature, 2014), partially acquired by the Obstetrics Department of the new hospital of Prato. Three images, shot from below, of the plant commonly known as the Judas Tree, at the sides, and of a walnut tree at the center, not only show us the beauty of nature, but also a sky that from a different vantage point watches over what happens on the earth. Though Abati is interested in deeper exploration of our acquired idea of beauty, as developed throughout art history, as something pleasant and therefore good for us, La Forza della Natura also hints at a vision of nature as a power beyond our control. In fact, the pictures were taken in a zone destroyed by a major earthquake, devastated and reclaimed by and thanks to the same forces of nature.
Piazza dell’Immaginario represents the continuation of a working model that proposes a reflection on the relationship between art/photography and the territory, and on art’s role within the urban context. Piazza dell’Immaginario turns the place in a sort of window that looks to dream, changing what we imagine and remember to happen in this square.
